What is the intention of the legislators?
To give European citizens the chance to have more control over what happens to their data. The GDPR introduces huge fines for breaching the new, tougher data protection rules.

DPO control functions
The EU mandates larger data processors to establish an independent DPO (Data Protection Officer) control function. The DPO will be tasked with overseeing the proper handling of personal data and reporting possible data leaks or breaches of the law.

When does GDPR come into force?
It was approved on 27 April 2016 and comes into force on 25 May 2018.
