What is the legislators’ intent?
To give European citizens a chance to have greater control over what happens to their data. The GDPR introduces huge fines for breaches of the new, stricter rules on the protection of personal data.
The DPO’s oversight function
The EU requires larger data processors to establish an independent oversight function, the DPO (Data Protection Officer). Their task will be to oversee the proper handling of personal data and to report possible data breaches or violations of the law.
When does the GDPR come into force?
It was approved on April 27, 2016, and comes into force on May 25, 2018.
