Edge wants to compete with Chrome. Offers users new features

Google Chrome has been one of the most commonly used browsers for many years. But that could change with the new version of Microsoft Edge, which will offer users a host of new features.

22. June 2021

Although Google Chrome is well ahead of other browsers, Microsoft has decided to build the new version of Edge to be able to compete with the browser giant at a minimum. It has therefore added better PDF support, a password manager or the so-called Sleeping Tabs.

Better PDF support

In early 2021, Microsoft revealed that it was going to properly rebuild its existing PDF reader. For example, we should expect to see previously launched documents automatically open on the page the user was last on. We could also expect better text selection features in the new version of Edge 91, but these details are not yet specified.

Year 2021 in a whirlwind of change

Microsoft is far from done with better support for PDF documents, though. We should now be able to move seamlessly between pages without the annoying white bars that used to appear when browsing faster.

Password and Password Generator

It's a testament to Microsoft's seriousness that the new features in Edge browser happened in February this year.

That's because Edge got a new feature in the form of password management. The way it works is that whenever you sign up for a new site, the browser will offer you an automatically generated strong password. Once you choose a password, it's stored in your browser and syncs across all the devices you use.

Are you worried about misuse of your stored data? All stored passwords are stored in encrypted form, so misuse shouldn t happen. And if it does, Password Monitor will alert you immediately.

Password Monitor

Password Monitor is a smart feature that monitors leaked passwords. If, for some reason, one of your passwords happens to appear on the "compromised" list, Edge will alert you and prompt you to change it.

Sleeping Tabs

Are you one of those users who very often slip into a large number of open tabs in the course of your internet browsing? Then you might be pleased with a very nice gadget in the form of Sleeping Tabs. After a certain period of time, when a tab is inactive, the browser releases system resources from the tab and thus "puts it to sleep". The tab then turns gray and does not unnecessarily burden your device's memory.

The "sleep" function is activated after two hours of inactivity, but its settings can be changed or turned off completely. In the System tab, in addition to editing Sleeping Tabs, you can add pages or sites that the browser will never put to sleep.

New themes and icons

Icons and themes also underwent a minor change in February. Although Edge still sticks to its fluent design, the new icons are more rounded and subtle.

The visual icing on the cake, then, are the themes you can add to your browser in the add-ons overview. Not only will the image you choose be welcomed on the home page, but the open tabs will also match it in colour.

Card Sync

There are many more new features that Edge currently offers, but we decided to pick one more for you - this one will tickle the fancy of any user who frequently changes the devices they work from.

Because now Edge can sync not only your history, but also the active tabs you're currently using. This makes it easy to sync your entire web history and active tabs between all your devices, including iOS and Android.
