The Ministry of the Interior is to hurry up with the preparation of a draft law on the new European Union regulation on the protection of personal data. Prime Minister Andrej Babiš has postponed the original March deadline to mid-February.
The interior ministry is to submit a follow-up bill to the GDPR to the government by mid-February at the request of Prime Minister Andrej Babis. The original deadline was March. Babiš said this on Friday during interpellations.
He admitted that the preparation of the law had been delayed. He said he was now waiting for a statement from the Office for Personal Data Protection. However, the latter only received the draft last week.
At the same time, Interior Minister Lubomír Metnar said that the ministry will try to apply as many exceptions as possible in the law to make its impact as least burdensome as possible.
The Interior Ministry is also preparing an information campaign on this new EU regulation. However, it will launch it after the draft law has been presented. This is due to replace the current privacy standards on 25 May. All authorities, institutions, non-profit organisations and other companies will have to provide data protection officers to manage and supervise the handling of personal data.
